GBC Overclocker Flex Mod
The Game Boy Color Overclocker Flex by robot_retro replaces the original GBC crystal and puts you in full control of your Game Boy Color's clock speed – from a relaxed 30 % all the way up to 170 % of the base clock. The flex PCB design eliminates almost all manual wiring.

Want to blaze through Pokémon battles at double speed or finally see what Tetris feels like at 170 % clock rate? The GBC Overclocker Flex by robot_retro makes it happen. The flex PCB replaces the original crystal on the GBC mainboard and gives you six different clock speeds via a button combo – no annoying manual wiring required.
Feature Overview
- 6 speed settings: 30 %, 50 %, 75 % (underclock) and 130 %, 150 %, 170 % (overclock) of the original 4.194 MHz base clock
- Intuitive controls: Increase speed = Select + Up; Decrease speed = Select + Down
- Flex PCB design: No manual wiring needed – only one optional LED indicator wire
- Optional LED indicator: Power LED blinks faster when overclocked, slower when underclocked – solid red at base (stock) speed
- Highly accurate base clock: 4.194 MHz at >0.01 % accuracy – no difference to the original crystal at stock speeds
- Very low power consumption

Configuring Maximum Speed
Depending on your installed display mod, you may need to limit the maximum speed via solder jumper to avoid screen glitches:

Verified to work at all speeds with the original GBC colour screen and the Hispeedido Q5 (Non-Laminated).
Not compatible with OLED screens.
Installation
Installation requires basic soldering skills and ideally a hot air station to remove the original GBC crystal. The flex PCB is then placed and soldered at a few points. Not a beginner project, but perfectly doable for experienced modders.
- Remove the original GBC crystal (hot air station recommended)
- Place the flex PCB and solder the required points (flux recommended)
- Optional: Solder wire to LED test point for speed indicator
