Anbernic RG477V – Gray | 12 GB / 256 GB

With the RG477V, Anbernic has built its most powerful vertical handheld to date. Instead of nostalgic restraint, this thing packs real flagship-level hardware – all in a classic upright form factor that just feels right for retro gaming.

Display & Form Factor

The 4.7-inch LTPS In-Cell panel with 1280×960 pixels and 120 Hz in 4:3 format is the ideal canvas for retro emulation: NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, PS1, Dreamcast, GameCube – all fill the screen edge-to-edge without any annoying black bars on the sides. The high pixel density delivers a sharp, vivid image that puts older 3.5-inch devices to shame. The all-glass front looks premium but attracts fingerprints – the gray model shows smudges far less than the black variant.

Performance & Emulation

At the heart of the RG477V is the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 (4nm, Mali-G615 GPU), paired with 12 GB LPDDR5X RAM. Real-world benchmarks show it comfortably outpaces similarly specced competitors like the Retroid Pocket Flip 2.

  • NES / SNES / GBA / PS1 / Dreamcast: Zero issues – completely smooth gameplay across the board.
  • GameCube & PS2: This is where the RG477V truly shines – up to 2.25× or even 3–4× resolution upscaling with no slowdown.
  • Nintendo Switch: Limited. The Mali GPU lags behind Snapdragon chips in Switch emulation (Yuzu/Sudachi); lighter 2D/3D titles work, demanding games stutter or show graphical glitches.

Note on the Mali GPU: Occasional rendering errors can appear in GameCube titles under Vulkan (e.g. Dolphin). Switching from Vulkan to OpenGL usually resolves this. Anbernic regularly pushes OTA updates to address such issues.

Cooling & Battery

The active cooling system – fan and heat pipe combined – keeps the chip stable even during extended sessions. In normal use the fan is barely noticeable; at maximum speed a light high-pitched noise may be audible – a fair trade-off for consistent performance. The 5500 mAh battery is rated up to 8 hours; expect 3–6 hours in real-world use depending on load.

Controls & Design

Hall Effect analog sticks with RGB lighting, illuminated Start/Select buttons, and a solid D-pad make this one of the most comfortable vertical handhelds Anbernic has ever made. The wider body means thumbs no longer bump into each other – a major upgrade over older models like the RG406V. A 6-axis gyroscope and vibration motor round out the feature set.

Connectivity & Software

Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and DisplayPort output via USB-C let you hook it up to a TV as well. Android 14 with Google Play comes pre-installed, along with a selection of emulators. Tinkerers can also opt for the community firmware GammaOS as an alternative to the stock OS.
