Dragon's Lair: The Legend (GB) – The Game Boy's Most Notorious Platformer, Re-Released

You know Dragon's Lair from the 1983 arcade machine – that Don Bluth-animated laserdisc spectacle? Forget it. This 1991 Game Boy version by Elite Systems shares nothing with the interactive film classic except the name and the hero. What you get here is something entirely different: a brutally hard precision platformer that will send you back to the start screen – again and again – with gleeful cruelty.

The Story

Princess Daphne has been kidnapped by the evil Mordroc, and the mythical Life Stone has been shattered into 194 fragments scattered across the world. Your mission as Dirk the Daring: collect every last fragment across 11 distinct regions – without dying. Sounds simple? It isn't.

Gameplay – No Enemies. Just You, Gravity, and Your Nerves.

In Dragon's Lair: The Legend, you don't fight a single creature. Instead, it's moving platforms, spike pits, and deadly hazards that stand between you and victory. Precision jumping is everything – mistiming a jump means death. Got lives left? You respawn right where you fell. Run out? Welcome back to the start screen.

  • 11 distinct regions, each with unique platforming design
  • 194 Life Stone fragments to collect
  • Zero enemies – pure environmental hazards only
  • Respawn at point of death (as long as you have lives)
  • Current speedrun record: 14 minutes and 34 seconds – think you can beat it?

EU Version – The "Easier" Edition (relatively speaking)

This re-release features the European version of the game, which includes several quality-of-life improvements over the US and Japanese releases:

  • No fall damage at lower heights (US/JP: instant death from roughly two-thirds screen height)
  • Refined jumping mechanics: Instead of infinite jumping by holding the button, players must tap repeatedly – preventing unintentional exploits
  • Extra lives compared to the North American version

Don't worry: "easier" is purely relative here. The legend of its difficulty remains very much intact.

Historical Background – More Than Just a Licensed Game

Dragon's Lair: The Legend is at its core a reskin of Elite's own ZX Spectrum game Roller Coaster (1985) – hence all the rotating platforms and mine cart sequences. That makes it a fascinating curiosity in gaming history, with far more depth than a typical franchise cash-grab. The cartridge also used a 1-megabyte chip – an impressive feat for the Game Boy at the time.

What's in the Box – Complete-in-Box Edition

  • Sealed box
  • Clear cartridge (transparent shell)
  • Clear cartridge protector
  • Instruction booklet
  • Sticker sheet
  • Silkscreened PCB with Dragon's Lair logo on the back
