Anyone running their SNES on a modern display or via RGB/SCART knows the struggle: pixel edges look soft, colors smear slightly from left to right – the classic SNES ghosting effect. Not a fault, not a defect – but an inherent circuit design flaw in the original PPU chips.
What causes it?
Ghosting and blurry edges on the SNES are caused by a built-in low-pass filter inside the PPU2 chip. The weak output waveform design of the proprietary ICs results in slow rise and fall times and voltage droop in the video signal – visible as the typical left-to-right smearing.
How the EdgeBuster works
The EdgeBuster tackles the problem right at the source: it reverse-injects the signal back into the custom ICs and stabilises the output waveform. The result is correct voltage levels, sharp pixel edges and a noticeably crisper picture overall – without any loss of color or detail.
Installation
Installation requires basic soldering skills:
- Solder points to GND and VCC
- One single wire per desired video signal pin
- Up to 4 pins supported – enough for all RGB and composite lines
Note: Soldering inside the console is required. Beginners are advised to follow a soldering guide or seek professional installation.
Compatibility
Compatible with 2-chip SNES models (e.g. SHVC-CPU-01 and similar revisions). For best results, RetroSix recommends pairing the EdgeBuster with their CleanRGB mod.
