Say goodbye to muddy RF output! The RetroSix CleanComp mod kit gives your Atari 2600 a clean composite and S-Video signal – tapped directly from the TIA chip, not just re-amplified noise. Includes board + cable.
- Composite & S-Video output in one kit
- Supports PAL & NTSC consoles
- No components need to be desoldered – original hardware stays intact
- Adjustable colour saturation for your display
RetroSix CleanComp – The Best Composite Signal Your Atari 2600 Has Ever Seen
The Atari 2600 is a legend – but its RF output is simply not viable in the modern world. Without a VCR or an old CRT TV, getting a picture onto a modern display is a real headache. The RetroSix CleanComp solves this elegantly: the small PCB taps directly into the TIA chip and completely reconstructs the composite signal from scratch using the chip's digital logic levels. No polishing a bad signal – a brand new, clean signal from the ground up.
How Does It Work?
Other composite mods tap into the already noisy signal and re-amplify it – garbage in, garbage out. The CleanComp takes a different approach: it bypasses the entire RF modulation circuit and taps directly into the TIA chip's digital outputs, reconstructing Luma, Chroma and Sync into a fresh composite signal. The result hits the IRE specification to within 10 mV – as clean as composite gets.
Composite and S-Video – Both in One Kit
The included cable delivers both composite and S-Video simultaneously. On the S-Video cable, the green wire is S-Video Y (Luma) and the blue wire is C (Chroma). If your TV has an S-Video input, you'll get noticeably sharper colour separation compared to composite alone.
Adjustable Saturation & Stereo Audio
The on-board dial lets you fine-tune colour saturation to match your specific TV – because not every display expects the same signal levels. The CleanComp also supports stereo audio with its own dedicated buffer, keeping the audio signal free from interference caused by the video circuitry.
PAL and NTSC – No Problem
Whether you have a European PAL or a North American NTSC Atari 2600, the CleanComp has you covered. Both variants are fully supported.
Installation Without Destruction
The PCB solders directly onto the TIA chip pins – no components need to be removed or desoldered. Your original Atari 2600 stays structurally intact. A few solder joints, attach the cable, done. RetroSix provides an installation video on YouTube.
Note on RetroTink Compatibility
If you're using a RetroTink (especially newer versions), be aware that the RetroTink device itself can introduce clock noise into the image, appearing as jailbars or checkerboard patterns. This is a known RetroTink issue, not a CleanComp defect.
