Xeno Crisis – the Alien Shooter for ModRetro M64

Grab your rifle and keep your head on a swivel, because something is hunting you. In Xeno Crisis, one or two elite marines are deployed to a remote research outpost completely overrun by alien creatures.

Fight through seven infested zones, rescue survivors, and push towards the source of the outbreak. Scavenge better weapons, stock up on ammunition, and upgrade your equipment if you intend to make it out alive. Quick reflexes and careful strategy are essential. Simply holding down the trigger will become a serious problem once the ammunition runs out.

Fast-Paced Multidirectional Combat

Xeno Crisis is a multidirectional arcade shooter in the tradition of Smash TV, Contra, and Mercs, wrapped in a dark science-fiction atmosphere heavily inspired by classic alien movies.

Outpost 88 is divided into seven distinct areas whose rooms are procedurally assembled for every playthrough. No two missions unfold in exactly the same way, forcing you to adapt your strategy on the fly.

  • Move freely, perform dodge rolls, and throw grenades
  • Multiple weapons with different characteristics and limited ammunition
  • Collect dog tags from defeated enemies and exchange them for upgrades
  • Improve your health, weapon power, and number of continues
  • Different enemy types with their own movement and attack patterns
  • Bio-engineered bosses at the end of each area
  • Multiple endings, including a true ending reserved for the most successful players
  • Designed for high-score chasing, repeated runs, and continual improvement

One or Two Players

You can clear the outpost alone or enter the fight with a second player. In local co-op, two marines battle the alien swarms simultaneously.

Another player can join at any point. Two marines may provide more firepower, but the battlefield also becomes considerably more chaotic as both players manage ammunition, movement, and constantly changing enemy waves.

Weapons, Ammunition, and Upgrades

Every zone presents new tactical decisions. More powerful weapons can mean the difference between survival and defeat, but their ammunition is limited. You must decide when to use your strongest equipment and when the standard rifle will have to do the job.

Dog tags collected from defeated enemies can be exchanged for additional health, weapon upgrades, or extra continues. Waste your resources carelessly and you may reach the next boss with little more than an empty magazine.

Pixel Art and Classic Science-Fiction Atmosphere

Xeno Crisis looks and sounds like a lost action game from the early 1990s. Its detailed pixel art was created by Henk Nieborg, while Daniel Bärlin's driving soundtrack accompanies the relentless combat.

Neon-lit facilities, grotesque alien creatures, and bio-engineered bosses create a mixture of classic 16-bit arcade action and dark science-fiction horror.

N64 Version for ModRetro M64

This edition comes as an N64 cartridge exclusively for the ModRetro M64. Bitmap Bureau's crowdfunded game was originally released for Sega Mega Drive and Genesis in 2019 before being brought to numerous other platforms.

Strengths and Characteristics

  • High replay value: Procedurally assembled areas create changing playthroughs
  • Local co-op: A second player can join the action at any time
  • Focused arcade gameplay: Fast movement, limited resources, and direct combat
  • Demanding: Ammunition and upgrades must be managed carefully
  • Classic controls: Eight-directional shooting may take some practice, particularly when aiming diagonally
