Buck Bumble – the Cyborg Bumblebee Cult Classic Returns

Nature is burning, the swarm is rising, and wings alone are no longer enough. Pollution and a chemical accident have transformed the insect world into an army of deadly mutant cyborg creatures. Only one hero stands between them and complete swarm domination.

Take flight as Buck Bumble, the world's most advanced cybernetic super-bee. Fly through gardens, swamps, and industrial facilities, battle hostile insects in the air, and save what remains of the natural world.

The unusual N64 action game from 1998 returns as a new physical release. This is not a remake or remaster, but the original game on a newly manufactured cartridge with a Collector's Edition box and printed instruction manual.

The Story

A chemical accident in London has thrown the insect world into chaos. The evil Herd army, a swarm of aggressive mutant insectoids, is exterminating native species and preparing to take complete control.

As a former Bumble Ace pilot, Buck has been equipped with cybernetic implants, body armor, and a versatile arsenal of weapons. This makes him the final line of defence against the mutant swarm. A perfectly reasonable responsibility for a bumblebee.

Fly, Fight, and Save the World

Buck Bumble combines free aerial movement with a three-dimensional third-person shooter. You can accelerate, hover, brake, and perform loops while targeting enemies, avoiding incoming fire, and completing mission objectives.

  • Fly freely, hover, brake, and perform loop-de-loops
  • Collect and switch between different weapons during missions
  • Wing-powered wrist laser with unlimited ammunition
  • Radar system for locating enemies and mission objectives
  • 19 missions of varying length and complexity
  • Short assault missions and larger multi-zone areas featuring teleporters
  • London-based locations including the Greenhouse, Compost Heap, and Swamp

19 Varied Missions

The campaign ranges from short and direct assault missions to extensive operations spanning several areas. Objectives include eliminating enemies, protecting objects, activating switches, navigating larger environments, and using teleporters.

Free movement in every direction makes the combat considerably different from traditional ground-based shooters. Attacks may come from the front, rear, above, or below, while limited visibility and twisting environments demand careful navigation.

Two-Player Multiplayer Modes

  • Buck Battle: A classic split-screen aerial dogfight. Two players pursue one another through an arena and attempt to shoot their opponent out of the sky.
  • Buzz Ball: A form of aerial football with weapons. Both players attempt to knock an oversized ball into the opposing goal while flying, shooting, and forcing their rival out of the way.

The Legendary Soundtrack

The driving speed garage soundtrack is one of the game's most famous features. Its mixture of electronic beats, sampled voices, and complete musical disregard for restraint is every bit as unusual as Buck Bumble himself.

For many players, the title theme in particular has become inseparable from the game and has achieved cult status of its own.

Strengths and Characteristics

  • Unique gameplay concept: Free aerial movement combined with three-dimensional shooting
  • Unusual setting: A cybernetic bumblebee battles armies of mutant insects
  • Varied arsenal: Several weapons and a standard laser with unlimited ammunition
  • Entertaining multiplayer: Aerial combat and the unusual Buzz Ball mode
  • Classic N64 technology: Limited draw distance can occasionally make navigation difficult
  • Learning curve: The free-flight controls differ considerably from conventional third-person shooters
