RetroSix Game Gear RePCB – A Brand-New Motherboard for All 1-ASIC Variants
Got a Game Gear with failing capacitors, unstable video, or just want a clean fresh start? The RetroSix Game Gear RePCB (1-ASIC) is a ground-up redesign of the original Sega Game Gear motherboard, built as a full replacement for all VA1, VA2, VA4, and VA5 variants (i.e. every Game Gear with a single ASIC). It is specifically designed for use with the RetroSix CleanScreen – the original LCD is not compatible.
Simply transplant your ASIC and EXT port from the original board onto the new one. For the cartridge slot, RetroSix recommends picking up the separate GameSlot so you don't have to desolder and transplant the original connector.

- Self-Powered via USB-C: No power or audio board needed for testing – just plug in a USB cable and headphones and the console powers right up.
- Reset Button: Handy for bench testing directly over USB-C.
- Japan/English Toggle Switch: Accessible from the battery compartment even when the console is closed.
- 50/60 Hz Switch: Note – 50 Hz is not compatible with CleanScreen v3; CleanScreen v4 will support it.
- Improved Audio: Rerouted traces combined with a new amp and audio filter circuit deliver sounds the original hardware never could.
- New SMD Crystal for the main system clock.
- New PCB Layout: Less noise, cleaner power rails, more accurate data transmissions.
- Status LEDs: Out-of-reset LED (ASIC status) and power-good LED for the 5V rail.
- Test Points & Solder Pads for all important signals – great for diagnostics and repair work.
- Brand-new high-quality SMD components with an improved PCB design that fixes known weaknesses of the original board.
Important Notes
- Only for 1-ASIC variants (VA1, VA2, VA4, VA5) – for VA0 (2-ASIC) see the separate RePCB 2-ASIC.
- Only compatible with the RetroSix CleanScreen – not with the original Game Gear LCD.
- Recommendation: Buy the GameSlot separately to avoid having to desolder the original cartridge port.
- Requires you to transplant the ASIC, cartridge slot, power/audio ribbons, and EXT port yourself.
