The Scroll pHAT from Pimoroni is one of those add-ons that looks deceptively simple but opens up a whole world of fun projects. Slap it onto your Pi and suddenly you've got a compact, eye-catching LED display ready to show whatever you throw at it — scrolling text, live data, animations, you name it.

What's on Board?

At the core of the Scroll pHAT is ISSI's IS31FL3730 matrix LED driver chip, a capable little chip that handles driving the full 5x11 grid of bright white LEDs with ease. That's 55 LEDs in total, and while you can't control each one's brightness individually, you do get matrix-wide brightness control — more than enough for most projects. The board is compatible with Raspberry Pi 3, 2, B+, A+, and Zero, so chances are your Pi is already a perfect match.

What Can You Build With It?

The real joy of the Scroll pHAT is just how versatile it is. Want your Pi to broadcast its IP address on boot? Done. Need a visual CPU usage meter on your desk? Easy. Fancy a scrolling name badge for your next maker meetup? Absolutely. Or maybe you just want to fire up a game of Pong or Snake on a tiny LED grid — yes, that's totally possible too.

Software & Getting Started

Pimoroni's Python library makes getting started wonderfully straightforward. With around a dozen lines of code you can have text scrolling across the display in no time. The library also ships with a smorgasbord of example projects including a binary clock, Conway's Game of Life, weather readouts, CPU activity displays, and scrolling messages. Whether you're a Python beginner or a seasoned coder, there's something here to inspire you.

Just keep in mind that the female header needs to be soldered — a quick and rewarding task that makes this a great little hands-on project for makers of all skill levels.
