N64: A Visual Compendium – The Definitive Book on Nintendo 64

Are you an N64 fan? Then this is the book you put on your shelf and never put away again. Across 436 pages, N64: A Visual Compendium tells the fascinating story of a console that changed the gaming world forever – Nintendo's massive leap into three dimensions, turbulent behind-the-scenes decisions included.

What's inside?

The book is packed with meticulously realised screenshots and game art accompanying profiles of over 150 games – from genre-defining blockbusters like Super Mario 64, GoldenEye 007 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to underappreciated gems like Beetle Adventure Racing, Mischief Makers, World Driver Championship and Body Harvest. Titles are arranged chronologically from Super Mario 64 (1996) to Dr. Mario 64 (2001), letting you experience the console's history as it unfolded. Every entry spans a double-page spread featuring the title, release year, genre, developer, publisher, a large-format screenshot and a write-up – penned either by a developer who worked on the game or a journalist with a genuine passion for the N64.

Interviews & Features

The foreword comes from David Doak, the man behind GoldenEye 64 and Perfect Dark. On top of that, there are exclusive interviews with industry luminaries: Jim Wornell (Nintendo), Michael Mendheim (BattleTanx), Kevin Bayliss (Diddy Kong Racing), Remington Scott (Turok) and Julian Eggebrecht (Star Wars). In-depth feature articles explore topics like the iconic N64 controller, the Expansion Pak and the rare 64DD drive. Contributors include Eiji Aonuma, Hal Barwood, Will Freeman and many more industry legends.

Honest assessment

Strengths: Bibliophile production quality at the highest level, Pantone lithographic printing, generous screenshot spreads, a wide range of developer and journalism voices, unique lenticular slipcase. Weaknesses: The book covers only around 40% of the total N64 library – if you're after an obscure title, you might not find it. Some texts are sourced from previously published material (with permission), so not everything is original writing. The early 3D polygon graphics naturally look rougher blown up to full page than the pixel art in other Bitmap volumes.

Packaging & Production

The hardcover book (170 × 230 mm) is lithographically printed with Pantone inks – colours pop, paper feels premium. Included: a sturdy 3mm protective slipcase with an animated lenticular cover and four ribbon bookmarks in the colours of the N64 controller buttons. A genuine collector's item.
