Whether you're building an internet radio, a home automation controller, or just want to give your Pi project a proper user interface, the Pimoroni Display-O-Tron HAT packs everything you need into one slim, tidy package. It slots right onto your Raspberry Pi's GPIO header and instantly gives you a display, backlight, LEDs, and touch buttons — no wiring mess, no fuss.

What's on Board

The star of the show is the 16x3 character LCD display, which supports the full ASCII character set plus eight custom glyphs you can define yourself. Backing it up is a six-zone RGB LED backlight driven by the SN3218 LED matrix chip — you can set each zone to any color you like for some seriously eye-catching effects. Six bright white bar graph LEDs (individually dimmable) let you visualize levels, progress, or anything else your project needs at a glance.

For input, the six capacitive touch buttons — managed by the Microchip CAP1166 driver chip — give your project a clean, responsive way to accept user commands without any mechanical buttons to wear out. Power, I2C, SPI, UART, PWM, and five GPIO pins are all broken out so you can keep expanding your build.

Software & Getting Started

Getting up and running is a breeze thanks to the Display-O-Tron Python library. It comes packed with examples covering the backlight, bar graph LEDs, and touch buttons, plus more advanced demos for menus, games, and even a full internet radio setup. If you're new to HATs or Python, you'll be surprised how quickly you can have something cool running on your Pi.

Good to Know

The Display-O-Tron HAT arrives fully assembled — the only soldering required is if you want to use the breakout pins. If you plan to keep your Pi in a case, Pimoroni recommends the Pibow Coupé, which leaves the capacitive touch buttons fully accessible.
