Anbernic has delivered its most capable vertical handheld to date – packing a true flagship-class chip, a gorgeous 4:3 display, and a feel that's like a modern Game Boy on steroids. Display – Large, Sharp, Smooth

The 4.7-inch LTPS In-Cell display outputs at 1280×960 pixels in a native 4:3 ratio with up to 120Hz. That's ideal for retro emulation: NES, SNES, PS1, Dreamcast, GameCube – all these systems use 4:3 and fill the screen edge to edge without black bars. The high refresh rate also enables black frame insertion for even smoother visuals. One minor caveat: the all-glass front is a fingerprint magnet – keep a microfiber cloth handy.

Performance – Dimensity 8300 Means Business

The MediaTek Dimensity 8300 (4nm, Mali-G615 GPU) is a massive step up from older Anbernic verticals. PS2 and GameCube emulation run without issue, even at upscaled resolutions. Dreamcast is no problem either. Nintendo Switch emulation is a different story though: the Mali GPU has known driver quirks that can cause rendering glitches – switching between Vulkan and OpenGL helps, but Switch emulation should be considered experimental. Active cooling (fan + heat pipe) keeps temperatures in check; the fan is audible under heavy load.

Controls & Feel

The device features Hall Effect joysticks with customizable RGB lighting and illuminated Start/Select buttons. The D-pad is solid, not mushy. The wider body compared to older Anbernic verticals gives more room for your hands – especially appreciated if you have larger hands. Shoulder buttons take a little getting used to compared to horizontal devices.

Battery & Connectivity

The 5,500mAh battery with fast charging is rated up to 8 hours – realistically expect 3–6 hours depending on load. Connectivity: Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C with DisplayPort output (connect to your TV!), headphone jack, microSD slot (up to 2TB), and dual speakers. A 6-axis gyroscope and vibration motor round out the package.

Software

Android 14 with Google Play and OTA updates. Pre-installed emulators get you gaming fast. For power users: GammaOS – a community-built alternative firmware – is already available for the RG477V and offers an even more refined gaming experience.
