RGB to YPbPr Transcoder Module – Connect RGB Sources to Component Displays

You've got a Scalable Video Switch (SVS) and want to feed your RGB consoles – like a SCART-connected SNES, Mega Drive or MiSTer – into a display with a Component Video (YPbPr) input? That's exactly what this module is built for. It slots into the output side of your SVS stack and cleanly converts RGB signals to YPbPr – no fiddling with cables or external adapters required.

How does the module work in the SVS stack?

The module is placed between the rest of the SVS stack and the output module. Output modules sitting after the transcoder in the stack benefit from the conversion. Modules before the transcoder continue to output in the native input format – giving you maximum flexibility in mixed setups. Best of all: you only need one single transcoder module per switch, no matter how many inputs you use.

Per-input configuration – smart and convenient

The SVS remembers per input whether it should be converted or simply passed through. So if you've got RGB and Component sources mixed together, you program once which input delivers what – and the switch handles the rest automatically. No manual switching, no guessing.

Color quality & color matrix

The color matrix circuit is based on Mike Chi's RetroTink RGB2Comp design, implemented with his permission and active technical input – which means proven top-tier quality. The module uses a fixed Rec. 601 color matrix, making it optimally suited for 240p and 480i – exactly the resolutions that matter most for retro gaming. Higher resolutions like 480p or 720p can also be converted, but color accuracy will deviate slightly from spec (Rec. 709 vs. Rec. 601). For most SD setups, this is a non-issue.

Important note: Firmware

Full functionality requires firmware version 1.15 or higher of the SVS Control Module. If you purchased your Control Module before May 2025, make sure to update your firmware first.

Who is this module for?

Perfect for anyone with an existing SVS who wants to output RGB sources to component-capable CRTs, PVMs or upscalers like the RetroTink 4K – without relying on separate external transcoder boxes. If you want to convert Component sources to RGB instead, you'll need the separate YPbPr to RGB Transcoder Module.
