At its core is a 16nm AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA, developed in close partnership with AMD and renowned community developer FPGAzumSpass. The result: hardware engineered to play all your favorite original Nintendo 64Ⓡ cartridges exactly as you remember them.

FPGA vs. Emulator – The Crucial Difference
While software emulators approximate the N64's hardware, the M64 recreates it directly in hardware. Instead of DDR memory, ModRetro uses four parallel PSRAM chips for more consistent, deterministic latency – crucial for cycle-accurate N64 behaviour. The FPGA core is built on the open-source MiSTer N64 core and is being actively improved by ModRetro. The enhanced core will be open-sourced for the community after launch.
