Discrete Orange – A Fresh GBA Homebrew Gem by Incube8 Games
Love your Game Boy Advance but tired of replaying the same old classics? Discrete Orange is exactly what you need. This brand-new homebrew title from French indie developer Tardigrade and publisher Incube8 Games brings a completely fresh gameplay concept to the beloved Nintendo handheld.
The Gameplay
Discrete Orange runs on one brilliantly simple rule: everything only moves when you move. Enemies, platforms, obstacles – the entire game world waits for your next input. Every step becomes a tactical decision, drawing inspiration from the iconic LCD handhelds of the 1980s, reimagined for the GBA.
You control a cute little Orange on a very important mission: its entire chocolate stash has been scattered across 20 puzzle-filled levels – and every last piece needs to be collected. Sounds sweet, gets seriously tricky fast!
Features at a Glance
- 20 puzzle levels with escalating difficulty, new mechanics, environments, and objectives
- Turn-based movement: enemies and platforms only react to your actions
- 5 chocolate bars per level to collect
- Step Ranking: hit the minimum step count per level for the top score – perfect for perfectionists
- Total Completion % counter for completionists
- In-game timer recorded at the end for speedrunners
- Charming, colorful pixel-art style
Award & Background
Discrete Orange earned 2nd place Overall at GBA Jam 2024 – out of nowhere. Developer Tardigrade is a software engineer from the south of France who has been making homebrew games since 2006 (originally for the Nintendo DS), and Discrete Orange marks his first commercial release. The result speaks for itself.
Physical Edition
Incube8 Games releases Discrete Orange as a physical GBA cartridge – on quality PCBs with premium presentation. If you want a real collectible for your GBA shelf, this is it. The game runs on any original Game Boy Advance, GBA SP, or Game Boy Player.
