GBA SP Overclocker Flex Mod

The Game Boy Advance SP Overclocker Flex by robot_retro replaces the original GBA SP crystal and puts you in full control of your console's clock speed – from a relaxed 30 % all the way up to 170 % of the base clock. Flex PCB design, minimal wiring, developed in collaboration with RJS FPGA.

  • 6 speed settings: 30 %, 50 %, 75 %, 130 %, 150 %, 170 % of base clock
  • Control via Select + R (faster) / Select + L (slower)
  • Ultra-accurate base clock: 4.194 MHz ±0.01 % – indistinguishable from stock at base speed
  • Optional LED indicator (power LED blinks faster/slower depending on clock speed)
  • Ultra-low power draw (<15 mA)
  • Multicoloured wire included

Game Boy Advance SP Overclocker Flex – Full Control Over Your Clock Speed

Want to blast through Pokémon at turbo speed or finally put a sluggish shooter into slow motion? The GBA SP Overclocker Flex by robot_retro makes it happen. This mod replaces the original crystal on the GBA SP motherboard and takes over all clock generation – precise, efficient, and with a clever flex PCB design that saves you most of the wiring hassle.

Speed Settings & Controls

Switch between six clock speeds on the fly – no reset needed. Just hit Select + R to speed things up, or Select + L to slow them down.

  • 30 % – Slow motion, great for tough sections
  • 50 % – Heavily throttled
  • 75 % – Slightly slower than stock
  • 100 % (base) – identical to the original GBA SP crystal (4.194 MHz ±0.01 %)
  • 130 % – Noticeable boost
  • 150 % – Significantly faster
  • 170 % – Full throttle (compatible displays only)

Optional LED Indicator

Want to always know your current clock speed? An optional wire to test point DL2A activates the LED speed indicator. The power LED blinks faster when overclocked, slower when underclocked – and stays solid green at stock speed.

Display Compatibility & Speed Limiting

Depending on your installed display, you can limit the maximum speed via solder jumper to avoid screen glitches:

  • Default (170 %): Stock LCD, Funnyplaying v2, Hispeedido v2 (non-laminated)
  • Bridge S1 → 150 %: Hispeedido Laminated v5 (minor screen tearing possible at 170 %)
  • Bridge S2 → 130 %: Funnyplaying IPS 3.0" (laminated), HISPEEDIDO "One Chip" v2

Note: Unconfirmed IPS kits may show glitches at higher speeds. Flash carts and reproduction cartridges only work at base clock speed.

Installation

The install is relatively straightforward for an overclocker mod – but not suitable for complete beginners. Basic soldering skills and ideally a hot air station are required to remove the original crystal.

  • Remove the original GBA SP crystal (hot air station recommended)
  • Place the flex mod and solder 3 points (flux recommended)
  • Run wires to the 3 marked test points (red, pink, blue)
  • Optional: Solder the green wire for the LED indicator
