ModRetro M64: original N64 games on modern FPGA hardware

The ModRetro M64 is a modern FPGA console designed for original Nintendo 64 game cartridges. It aims to reproduce the timing and audio behaviour of the original system while adding modern video output, convenient firmware updates and contemporary connectivity.

Rather than running games through a conventional software emulator, the M64 recreates the functions of the original hardware using a powerful AMD Artix UltraScale+ FPGA. This combines the familiar behaviour of the original console with a straightforward HDMI connection for current televisions and monitors.

Continue using original Nintendo 64 cartridges

The ModRetro M64 is compatible with original Nintendo 64 cartridges. Games are not restricted to one geographical region: the console supports PAL and NTSC cartridges from Europe, Japan and North America.

You can therefore continue using your existing N64 collection without relying on downloaded ROM files or a separate emulator. Insert a cartridge, switch on the console and start playing within seconds. No user account or permanent internet connection is required.

HDMI output at resolutions up to 4K

The M64 includes an HDMI output and supports 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 4K display modes. It can be connected directly to modern televisions, monitors, AV receivers and compatible HDMI switches.

Integrated video processing provides additional options including scanlines and configurable CRT filters. You can choose a clean digital presentation or create an image that more closely resembles the appearance of a traditional CRT television. Audio is delivered digitally as uncompressed 48 kHz, 16-bit PCM.

Four controller ports for local multiplayer

Like the original Nintendo 64, the ModRetro M64 includes four controller ports. Local multiplayer games can still be enjoyed together in the same room, without online subscriptions, user accounts or four separate screens.

The M64 supports several N64-style controllers, including original Nintendo 64 controllers, the ModRetro M64 Pro Controller and selected controllers from Hyperkin, Retro Fighters and 8BitDo. Nintendo Switch Online N64 controllers can also be used with a compatible accessory.

Built-in Expansion Pak and Controller Pak

An Expansion Pak and Controller Pak are integrated into the console. Games that require or benefit from the additional memory can therefore be played without installing a separate Expansion Pak.

Compatibility and functionality can be improved through firmware updates. Updates can be installed wirelessly over Wi-Fi or through the console's wired USB connection.

Silent, compact and maintenance-friendly

The M64 uses a fanless thermal design and therefore remains silent during operation. Its transparent enclosure exposes the internal circuit board, while adjustable LED lighting illuminates the artwork on the inserted cartridge.

A dedicated eject button makes cartridges easier to remove. The cartridge-slot flaps can also be held open when the connector needs careful cleaning. The firmware and FPGA core are designed as open-source projects, making the system attractive to technically minded users and the modding community.

Controllers and accessories for the ModRetro M64

The M64 range includes more than the console itself. Compatible controllers and accessories allow you to continue using existing N64 equipment or add modern controls and additional video connections.

M64 Pro Controller with TMR thumbstick

The ModRetro M64 Pro Controller retains the distinctive three-pronged shape of the classic N64 controller while introducing modern materials and components. Its construction combines a rigid aluminium rear shell with a textured, partially transparent front.

The replaceable TMR thumbstick uses magnetic sensing technology and is designed to resist conventional analogue-stick drift. Depending on the connected device, the controller can be used through wired or wireless connections. In addition to the M64, it is compatible with original Nintendo 64 consoles and Windows, Linux and Android devices.

Power options include a rechargeable battery pack, an AA battery pack and wired operation. A traditional-style rumble motor is also integrated.

M64 AV Adapter for CRT televisions

Players who prefer a genuine CRT television rather than a simulated CRT filter can connect the console through the optional M64 AV Adapter. The adapter converts the console's HDMI output into analogue video and audio signals.

Supported outputs include Composite Video, S-Video, Component or YPbPr and RGBs, together with analogue stereo audio. The adapter supports PAL and NTSC formats and classic resolutions including 240p, 288p, 480i, 480p, 576i and 576p.
