Jim Power in Mutant Planet – The Amiga Classic, Now on CD32
In 1992, Jim Power in Mutant Planet by Digital Concept / Loriciel launched on Amiga, Atari ST, and Amstrad CPC and immediately became a legend – celebrated for its punishing gameplay, impressive visuals, and one of the best video game soundtracks of the early 90s. Decades later, Piko Interactive made the impossible happen: through a crowdfunding campaign, a brand-new CD32 version was developed and released in 2021. For owners of an Amiga CD32, this is a very big deal.
The Story
Jim Power is the chief of the Special Warfare Unit, personally responsible for the President's security. When the President's daughter is kidnapped and taken to the Mutant Planet – a terrifying world swarming with evil beings – Jim takes on the most dangerous mission of his life. You step into his shoes and fight through a relentless gauntlet of monsters, traps, and bosses. Fair warning: this game is tough. Very tough. One hit and Jim is done.
Gameplay
What makes Jim Power stand out to this day is its variety: the game switches between classic side-scrolling platforming, top-down perspective, and horizontal shoot-em-up sections. This keeps things fresh and demands different reflexes and tactics throughout. Fans of Contra, Mega Man, or Turrican will feel right at home.
Soundtrack by Chris Hülsbeck
The soundtrack was composed by none other than Chris Hülsbeck – the man behind the iconic Turrican soundtracks. The Amiga version is widely regarded as the best-sounding version, making full use of the Paula audio chip. On the CD32, that audio legacy shines through beautifully.
A Piece of Amiga History
This release is the result of a years-long crowdfunding project that began in 2014 and entered active development in 2019. Piko Interactive produced versions for multiple platforms – the CD32 release is the only official disc version for Commodore's 32-bit console, making it an absolute collector's item. The CDs were professionally pressed and the packaging is physical and high quality. For collectors, Amiga enthusiasts, and retro gaming fans looking to add a genuine highlight to their CD32 library, there's hardly a better choice.
