The War Against the Bydo Empire – Now on CD

The Bydo come from the depths of space, and humanity sends its R-9 fighters into battle. What once blasted through headphones on the Game Boy Color is now available on CD: 33 tracks from R-TYPE DX, split into two distinct sections – a fresh GB remix sound and the classic original audio.

Two Soundtracks, One CD

The Music Encore side with 19 tracks is the real highlight: WASi303 – a composer with a deep mastery of retro game audio – has reconstructed the music using authentic handheld hardware sound chips. The result sounds like the GBC was always capable of what it technically lacked: every stage gets its own theme, arcade-faithful, punchy and yet authentically chiptune. Tracks like SCRAMBLE CROSSROAD, METAL CRUSHER or NAMELESS SOLDIERS show just how much energy was packed into these old tunes.

The BGM Original side with 14 tracks delivers the classic Game Boy arrangements of both games – composed by Masato Ishizaki (R-TYPE) and Masahiko Ishida (R-TYPE II), arranged for GBC by David Whittaker. If you want to hear how it sounded back in the day: this is it.

Artwork & Extras

The CD artwork was created by Paul «OTAKING» Johnson – an English 2D animator and anime artist known for his detailed retro anime style, who already produced his own R-TYPE anime animation for YouTube back in 2016. His unmistakable late-80s/early-90s aesthetic is a perfect match for the Bydo universe.

Also included: an exclusive printed interview with producer Nobuhiro Yoshikawa – a real treat for anyone who wants to dive deeper into the story behind R-TYPE DX.
